How it works

Mount, pick an engine, drive.

Live Drive turns the way you drive into an engine note, in real time, using only your phone.

Mount your phone

Put it in any phone mount and connect it to your car stereo over Bluetooth, USB or a cable. WattGrowl calibrates itself to the mount.

Pick an engine

Small-block V8, twin-turbo straight-six, rotary, flat-plane V8, V12, diesel or superbike: choose from 37, or build your own.

Drive

The phone's motion sensors and GPS tell WattGrowl how hard you accelerate, brake or coast. You hear the pull, the shifts, the turbo and the crackle on lift-off.

Features

Every engine is modeled, not looped.

Firing order, exhaust pipes, muffler, turbo, supercharger and rev limiter all shape the sound, so each engine has its own voice.

  • Simulator with on-screen throttle and brake: try any engine anywhere
  • Garage rev mode: blip the throttle while parked
  • Throttle pad at traffic lights: rev at a standstill, back to gears when you move off
  • 0–60 mph, 0–100 km/h and quarter-mile timers, trip statistics
  • Stops when the car audio disconnects, restarts when the same car reconnects
  • Drive recordings, plus classic, modern, race and retro dashboard themes

Screens

FAQ

Questions

Do I need any extra hardware?

No. WattGrowl uses your phone's own motion sensors and GPS. There is no OBD dongle and nothing to wire into the car.

Which cars does it work with?

Any electric car, and any car stereo you can connect your phone to over Bluetooth, USB or a cable. You can also listen on headphones; a hearing-safety cap limits the volume there.

Does it need Android Auto?

No. WattGrowl plays through the car stereo like any audio app. You start it on the phone, and it keeps running with the screen off.

Can people outside the car hear it?

Only as much as they would hear your car stereo. The sound is for the people inside the car.

What is free and what is premium?

The simulator, garage rev mode, all 37 engines, the Sound Studio and the Engine Workshop are free. Live Drive, the engine sound from your real driving, is premium: try it free for 3 days, then $2.99 a year, or pay $14.99 once for life.

How does the free trial work?

Pick the yearly plan in the app and the first 3 days are free. When the trial ends, Google Play charges $2.99 for the year unless you cancel before then in Google Play under Payments & subscriptions. The trial is for new subscribers.

Is there an iPhone version?

An iPhone version is in development and coming soon. WattGrowl is available on Google Play for Android today. Follow us on Instagram @engine_sound_app to hear when it lands.
