WattGrowl
Engine Workshop

Build your own engine sound, cylinder by cylinder.

Choose the layout, the cylinder count and the firing order, then shape the exhaust, the turbo and the pops. In the WattGrowl Engine Workshop every synthesis parameter is open, and the engine you build sits in the Garage next to the other 37.

WattGrowl Engine Builder Identity panel for an engine based on a library engine: name Odd-Fire V10 8.4, category Muscle, power 645 hp, torque 813 Nm and recommended gearbox Manual, with the V10 engine block below

How it works

From blank block to the road in three steps.

No audio files, no plugins: the engine you design is synthesized live on your phone, like every engine in the library.

Pick a starting point

In the Garage, tap New under My engines or open any library engine. Give it a name, a category such as Muscle, power in hp, torque in Nm and a recommended gearbox.

Shape the engine

Set up the engine block, then work through the sections: Combustion, Exhaust, Pops & bangs, Intake & cams, Turbo / supercharger, Mechanical and Character.

Save and drive

Saved under My engines, it revs in the free simulator and garage rev mode, and on the road with Live Drive.

Engine block

Pick the cylinders and the order they fire in.

The engine block is where the character starts. Choose a layout: Inline, V, Flat / boxer, W, Rotary or Single. Set the number of cylinders and, on a V, the bank angle. Then choose the engine type, 4-stroke, 2-stroke or Rotary (Wankel), and a crank / firing variant, or keep the engine as it was designed.

The firing order is spelled out in full, such as 1-10-9-4-3-6-5-8-7-2 on the Odd-Fire V10, with a strobe view of the cylinders firing. The order sets the spacing between exhaust pulses, and that spacing is a big part of an engine's voice. It is the same reason a cross-plane V8 rumbles while a flat-plane one howls.

Engine Builder engine block: V layout selected, 10 cylinders, 90-degree bank angle, 4-stroke engine type, crank and firing variant As designed (preset), and the firing order 1-10-9-4-3-6-5-8-7-2 in strobe view

Sections

Seven sections, nothing locked.

Below the block, the sound is grouped into seven sections. Change one, leave the rest.

Combustion and Character

The core of the engine's voice and the overall personality laid on top of it.

Exhaust and Pops & bangs

The pipes and muffler, and how much the engine crackles on lift-off and bangs at the limiter.

Intake & cams and Mechanical

The intake roar and cams, plus the mechanical sound of the valvetrain and belts.

Turbo / supercharger

The forced-induction setting behind the spool, whistle or whine and the boost gauge.

Sound Studio

Then mix it for your car.

The Workshop shapes the engine; the Sound Studio shapes what comes out of the speakers. A live output meter shows peak, RMS and limiter levels next to a spectrum, so you can see how hard the mix is pushing.

  • Mix presets: Stock, Sport, Race and Night (quiet), or save your own.
  • Faders for exhaust, intake, mechanical, turbo, pops and engine gain.
  • Three-band equalizer to add bass or soften a harsh top end.
  • Listening position: Cabin, Exterior rear, Engine bay or Onboard race.

Do the building and mixing while parked. Once Live Drive is running it is hands-free with the screen off, and the sound plays inside the car for you and your passengers. It is not a pedestrian warning system.

Sound Studio live output: waveform and spectrum with peak at −7.5 dB, RMS at −19.0 dB and limiter at 0.0 dB, above the mix presets Stock, Sport, Race and Night (quiet) and a Save current button

FAQ

Questions about building your own engine

Can I create my own engine sound?

Yes. In the WattGrowl Engine Workshop you start from any of the 37 library engines or from a new one, and every synthesis parameter is open. What you build is saved under My engines, next to the library.

Can I change the firing order?

Yes. Pick a crank / firing variant in the Engine block section, or keep the engine as designed. The firing order is shown in full with a strobe view.

Can I build a rotary or a two-stroke engine?

Yes. The engine type can be 4-stroke, 2-stroke or Rotary (Wankel), and the layout can be Inline, V, Flat / boxer, W, Rotary or Single.

What is the difference between the Engine Workshop and the Sound Studio?

The Engine Workshop builds the engine itself: the block, firing order, exhaust, intake, turbo or supercharger and pops. The Sound Studio mixes what you hear: presets, faders, a three-band equalizer and the listening position.

Is the engine builder free?

Yes, building costs nothing: the Engine Workshop, the Sound Studio and all 37 engines are in the free app, and your engine revs in Drive sim and Garage rev. Playing it from your real driving is Live Drive (premium), $2.99 a year after a 3-day free trial on the yearly plan, or $14.99 once for life.

Your engine, your sound.

Build it for free, rev it in the simulator, then take it on the road.
